What have we been doing in year 3?
Find out what we've been doing recently...
The children have come back to School wonderfully, they have settled and adapted well to the transition from KS1 to KS2 and I am incredibly proud of them all. I have also been impressed with their attitude towards learning which in turn has created a calm environment for everyone.
What have we been learning about in class?
Writing:
The children began the term by writing fact files based on Emmeline Pankhurst, they made sure their fact files included important events and dates. Their wonderful fact files are now placed on our class display next to our beautifully handmade rosettes.
We have recently begun to look at suspense writing (creating a story where something bad may happen). We have watched suspense videos, looked at examples of suspense stories and created word banks based on a haunted mansion setting. The children have been incredibly engaged and enthused. Take a look at our cold tasks before we launch into our suspense writing lessons! We will be focusing on the text ‘Zelda Claw’ to help support us write our final writing piece (please see document below).
Spelling:
We have started our first spelling unit based on the prefixes ‘un’ and im’. We upload spellings and red words (high frequency words) every week on your child’s doodlespell extras. We have spotted many children completing their spelling assignments which is fantastic. So, thank you for your support.
It is crucial that the children practice these spellings and remain in their green zone on doodles as this will not only reinforce and consolidate their spelling lessons but also support their writing in School.
Reading:
We have now finished reading our class text ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ and have started to read as voted by the children ‘The worst witch’ by Jill Murphy- (perfect timing for spooky season!)
In addition to our class reading, we check home schoolbooks every week so please ensure:
- Homeschool books are brought into school everyday
-Your child is reading alongside you 3 x a week.
- Reading is recorded in their home school book.
- You are working on your bronze reading award challenges (these can be found at the back of your child’s home school book).
* If your child is no longer in phonics, they can change their own books using our classroom library. If your child is attending phonics their book will be changed every week by their teaching adult.
Maths:
We have been looking at place value of numbers up to 1,000 we have used place value grids and base 10 to support us. Year 3 are keen to challenge themselves in Maths lessons which is brilliant. We have noticed lots of the children are completing their doodle extras which is also fantastic! Our hard work must have paid off as we are top of the class doodle board! Thank you for supporting this.
Science:
We have started our topic based on ‘animals and humans’ and have already learnt about the five main food groups, what nutrients we need and different animal diets. The children have loved looking at this topic and have been asking lots of questions.
Geography:
We are focusing on extreme weather and have learnt about different types of extreme weather such as hurricanes, droughts, and tornadoes. We have also learnt about how storms affect us and what happens when there is extreme heat.
Swimming:
The children have launched into their first few weeks of swimming, and I’ve heard they’ve been thoroughly enjoying these lessons and demonstrating our Keyworth Code superbly. Well done Year 3!
It’s been a busy few weeks in Year 3 and I am so proud of our positive beginnings!
