What have we been up to?

We are in the full swing of Autumn 2 and have had a busy few weeks.

Attenborough class have been exploring autumn in more depth, practising their addition and subtraction and being creative storytellers to retell the story of Cinderella.

We have also been learning our Christmas songs ready for the Christmas performance at the end of term. Check out our enrichment blog for links to the songs! Year 1 and 2 are learning 'There's no-one quite like Grandma' as our main class song. .

Science
The children have been on a materials hunt within our classroom and around school looking at what the most common material is. We found that we have a lot of plastic and wooden objects in school! This week, we started looking at the properties of materials found in our classroom and classified them into groups based on their similarities and differences.

We learnt more about autumn and looked at how and where we can see autumn in our school grounds. We are starting to notice more leaves on the floor and not on the trees. It is also much wetter than when we started Year 1, and it is very muddy. We gathered natural objects and rubbed them on paper to create an autumn colour palette, and found autumn is represented by the colours; brown, orange, yellow, red and a little bit of green.

Literacy
We have turned into storytellers to retell the story of 'Cinderella'. We have been 'hot seating' the characters from our story to understand what they think and how they feel throughout the story.

Dippy and Dolly                                                              Fairy Godmother

This week, we have started to unpick the model text and explore the features needed to be a good writer. We have learnt how to use similes, changed some of the vocabulary in the story, and used speech bubbles to portray the characters' thoughts and feelings.

Geography
We have learnt which countries make up the United Kingdom and have been exploring the human and physical features we may find in Keyworth. We know that physical features are things that occur naturally and are a part of our physical environment. Over the next few weeks, we will be taking a walk around the village and looking at which human and physical features we can see, using simple maps, and taking pictures of the places we see. When we are back at school, we will map out our walk using the photographs we took and discuss whether we saw more physical or human features and why. We will also explore our school grounds.
