Obama Class are Terrible Tudors!

Today, Obama Class have had their Tudor enrichment day with Mr Adby from Partake History.

The day started with the children becoming archaeologists and examining a range of replica Tudor artefacts. They spent a lot of time talking about what the artefacts were used for and who would have used them. They also used their sketching skills to draw the artefacts.

After break, we went into the hall and Mr Adby taught us how to dance the farandole.

Next, he taught us how ladies curtseyed and gentlemen bowed.

Then he taught us the galliard (the favourite dance of both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I).

The final part of the morning involved spices which were commonly used in Tudor England. We looked at and smelled cloves, cinnamon, caraway seed - which was used for flavouring Tudor sweets (comfits) -  aniseed, cardamon (known as grains of paradise in Tudor England) and nutmeg.

After lunch, two children were chosen to be dressed as a young Prince Edward and Princess Elizabeth (Edward VI and Elizabeth I). Megan and Riley stood very patiently as layer after layer was added.

Next, we had the chance to write - with real goose feather quills and ink!

Finally, we went back into the hall to play a traditional Tudor game: Hunt my Lord's deer.

The children had a wonderful day with Mr Adby, enriching their understanding of the Tudor Period - and having lots of fun in the process!
