Dear Parents,

We're excited to announce that Year 4 will be participating in an immersive Roman Experience Day on November 27th! This in-school event promises to be a lively, educational journey, allowing our students to explore the fascinating world of ancient Rome through hands-on activities, historical role-play, and interactive storytelling. The cost of the day will be £15 And should be paid through Arbor by 22nd November.

Here's an overview of the exciting activities your child will experience throughout the day:

1. Roman Introduction

   The day will begin with a dramatic introduction as a Roman soldier summons the children with a loud blast of the Cornu (a Roman horn). Students will discuss the impact of the Roman conquest on Britain, learning about daily life, clothing, and customs. Volunteers will have the chance to dress up in Roman attire, helping bring history to life.

2. Legionary Session 

   In this session, our specialist will introduce students to the *Impedimenta*, the Roman Legionary’s marching pack, breaking it down item by item. Children will get to handle authentic replicas, including some pieces of weaponry, and demonstrate their warlike skills as they form a *testudo* (tortoise formation) with wooden shields. This session offers an impressive look at the might of the Roman army, including tales of Roman siege engines and battle strategies.

3. Roman Artefact Carousel

   Students will rotate through three different stations, each offering the chance to handle high-quality replicas of Roman artefacts, many of which are museum-quality pieces. This hands-on experience will help deepen their understanding of Roman life and culture.

4. Boudicca Session

   The legendary Boudica herself may make an appearance to share stories of her life and battles against Roman rule, using traditional storytelling techniques. Students will have the opportunity to decorate their own Celtic-style brooches, adding a creative element to their historical understanding.

5. Gladiator Training

   Here, students will learn about gladiators and practice with wooden spears and nets, learning how these ancient warriors fought in the arenas of Rome.

6. Roman Pastimes and Games

   The children will explore Roman leisure activities, trying out ancient games such as marbles, dice, and Ludus Latrunculorum (a Roman strategy game) with authentically reproduced knucklebones. They’ll also get to dress in gladiator gear, experiencing Roman entertainment traditions first hand.

7. Roman Storytelling

   We’ll end the day with a group storytelling session, where students will hear traditional Roman myths as well as some “silly stories” that are sure to be a hit. This shared experience is always a favourite and helps bring the day’s learning to a fun and memorable close.
