Exploring Rocks, Earthquakes, and Volcanoes: A Hands-On Afternoon of Learning

Hands on learning in Year 3...

This afternoon, we dived deep into the fascinating world of rocks, earthquakes, and volcanoes, applying our science knowledge in engaging and interactive ways. We were fortunate to have Marli from BGS join us, bringing a wealth of expertise and fun activities to enhance our learning experience.

Our first session focused on rocks—igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Using hand lenses, we examined a variety of samples up close, marvelling at their unique textures and features. We learnt about how these rocks form and the many ways they’re used in everyday life. The children sketched their favourite specimens, capturing intricate details, and shared interesting facts they discovered during the activity.

In the second session, we turned our attention to why some people choose to live near areas prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The children explored reasons such as the fertile soils and stunning scenery these regions often offer. Building on this understanding, they designed their very own volcanoes, considering the potential impacts such structures might have on local communities.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon filled with curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. Watching the children apply their knowledge with such enthusiasm was a joy!
