A window into y3
Find out about our learning recently...
Maths:
We have completed our unit on multiplication and division. It would be beneficial for the children to continue practising their 2, 5, 10, 3, 4, and 8 times tables, as these are foundational for solving problems in other areas of maths we will soon explore. We have now started a new unit on measurement, focusing on centimetres, millimetres, and metres. The children have learnt how many centimetres are in a metre and how many millimetres are in a centimetre. Keep an eye on DoodleMaths Extras, as I add activities there to reinforce the learning taking place in the classroom. We’re working brilliantly on our doodlesmaths and this is evident within lessons.
Literacy:
We have continued studying the story of Jack and the Beanstalk, rehearsing it using our story map. Over the past few days, the children have participated in immersive drama activities to deepen their understanding of the story. More recently, we have focused on enhancing our vocabulary by exploring the words used in the text and their definitions. In the coming days, we will delve further into the text, working on retrieval and inference questions, as well as making predictions

The Importance of learning Spellings on doodlespell:
Spelling plays a crucial role in your child’s literacy development and overall communication skills. Here’s why it’s important:
- Clear Communication
- Correct spelling helps your child convey their thoughts clearly and avoid misunderstandings when writing.
- Building Confidence
- Being able to spell correctly boosts your child’s confidence in their writing and academic work.
- Improved Reading and Writing Skills
- Spelling reinforces the link between letters and sounds (phonics) , which supports reading fluency, comprehension, and writing development.
- Lifelong Skills
- While technology like spellcheckers can be helpful, strong spelling skills are essential for situations where these tools may not be available or accurate.
- Vocabulary Growth
- Learning to spell expands your child’s understanding of new words, their meanings, and how to use them effectively.
I just wanted to share a few books we have been looking at over the past 3 weeks- including books based on ‘words matter’, ‘saying sorry’ and Chinese New Year:
History:
Our history unit on The Stone Age has been engaging and informative. The children have learnt about when the Stone Age occurred (2.6 million years ago) and explored the different stages: the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and, next week, the Neolithic period. We’ve also discussed what life was like during these times. Our upcoming trip is next week. To find out more: click here.
Science:
We have started our Light topic, exploring what light and dark are, identifying light sources, discussing which colours are visible in the dark, and investigating reflections using mirrors.
French:
We have started a new unit on ice cream! The children have learnt the names of different flavours and have been practising their phonetics.
RE:
In Religious Education, we have been studying brave figures from the Bible. The children learnt about Noah from Noah’s Ark and Sarah and Abraham, discussing their stories and acts of bravery.
ICT:
This half-term, we have started learning about how to stay safe on the internet and the type of information available on public forums. We will continue exploring this topic in greater depth during Internet Safety Week. We have also explored our topic ‘iNetwork’, discussing how the internet provides opportunities for collaboration and communication, and examining what this looks like in practice.
Jigsaw:
This half-term, we have been exploring the topic of Dreams and Goals. We have focused on understanding what dreams are, the steps needed to achieve them, and the barriers we may encounter along the way. Using scenarios provided by the Jigsaw programme, we have discussed how some barriers may not always be visible.
