  • WonderDome Mobile Planetarium

    Published 11/01/24, by Mel Harris

Year Five are to have an exciting enrichment afternoon in two weeks' time.

The WonderDome mobile planetarium has been booked for the afternoon of Friday the 26th January.

WonderDome provides an inspiring learning experience, which captivates all ages. An inflatable planetarium will be brought into school, where the knowledgeable presenter will set up in the Hall and provide an amazing planetarium show.

A WonderDome mobile planetarium is like a large domed tent, without a base. It is blown up with a large fan and everyone enters through the simple zip entrance. When it’s inflated the equipment inside projects 360 degrees to reveal the wonders of the Universe.

  • Happy New Year!

    Published 05/01/24, by Mel Harris

    Welcome to 2024.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and a well-earned rest.

Our topic this term focuses on the Terrible Tudors, alongside a science focus on the Earth in Space and Forces. This half-term’s curriculum information and knowledge organisers can be found as  attachments at the bottom of this blog.

What is our class text for this term?

Once we have finished Holes, we will be turning our attention to a new book: Boy in the Tower by Polly Ho-Yen. Whilst, it doesn’t link directly to our history topic, it is nevertheless a beautifully written book that captures the reader from the very first chapter.

A reminder of the school expectations for your child:

    * Read at least 3 times a week at home (or alternatively, come to Reading Lair!)

    * Check and sign your child’s home-school diary every week.

    * Remain in the green zone on Doodlemaths and Doodlespell (this totals approximately 40 minutes every week). I will be checking this every Monday and children who are in the Red Zone will be expected to give up their playtimes until they are in the Green Zone.

    * Work on achieving the Silver Reading challenges (these can be found at the back of your child’s home-school diary). If your child hasn't achieved their Bronze, they can still work on this.

    * Check the class blog regularly to see what we’re doing in school.

  • Obama Class can sew!

    Published 11/12/23, by Mel Harris

We are using our final two weeks to complete a DT task linked to our last topic. The enquiry question was: Can you design a bag for a coal miner that fastens?

As a class, we have explored different types of bags and their purposes.

We have designed our own bags with a motif.

We have practised running stitch and back stitch.

  • Autumn Two...Welcome Back!

    Published 09/11/23, by Mel Harris

I hope you had a lovely half term and enjoyed some quality time with each other and some decent weather.

This week has been a busy one. We’ve started new topics in English and Science, and will soon be embarking on music lessons in class. I have attached a curriculum map for your information.

Our topic this term is Brilliant Biomes! Exploring plant and animal life in different parts of the world, we will be focussing particularly closely on the Savannah Grasslands and Deserts. I have attached a Knowledge Organiser for Brilliant Biomes to help you understand and perhaps talk about with your child. Parts of our writing units will be closely linked to our topic as well.

In Maths, we continue with multiplication and division before progressing onto fractions. As I discussed with you all at Parents’ Evening, this means that times tables are absolutely crucial. Please support your child with this by using Doodles – there is a times tables area that they can use.

  • When Obama Class went to the National Coal mining Museum

    Published 12/10/23, by Mel Harris

Today, we learnt what it was really like to be a coal miner on our trip to the National Coal Mining Museum in Wakefield, South Yorkshire.

It was an early (8 o'clock start) when we climbed on the bus for the traffic-delayed two-hour journey. The class were brilliantly behaved and praised by our driver for the day.

When we arrived, it was straight to the pit head where we donned hard hats and special light kits for the 140 m trip down below the surface to where the underground mining tour began. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take anything with batteries below the surface, so there are no photos of our experience in the dark so far down below the Earth's surface.

We travelled down in a cage lift and the class were all incredibly brave as we descended for two minutes into the darkness.

The tour took us on a journey back to Victorian Britain, where we were able to see a family mining: the father hewing the coal: the mother carrying the coal; the children hurrying and thrusting the coal carts; and the youngest child sitting in total darkness, holding the traps that controlled the air flow in the mine.

We journeyed through the underground tunnels and through time, seeing the introduction of pit ponies and the advent of machinery and its development . The children were able to experience the narrow tunnels where they had to crawl to move around. Eventually, we arrived back at the cage lift and ascended the 140 m back to the surface.

We then went to look at an exhibition of the history of mining where we learnt more about the safety lamps that we had seen underground, as well as some of the machinery that was used and the methods of communicating with each other.

After lunch, we then participated in two workshops: the life of a child miner in Victorian Britain; and the role of pit ponies in mining history.
