What foods do we still eat today that were around in Ancient Maya times?
Our history topic this half term is Ancient Maya and for our DT project, we will be following recipes based on Ancient Maya food.
There are lots of things that we still eat today that were around in Ancient Maya times such as tomatoes, corn, avocado and chocolate. There are also lots of things that we wouldn't eat any more like monkey brains and iguana eggs! Before the children could decide what they were going to make, we had a food tasting session. We tried a selection of Mexican dips and also different types of tortilla. One was made with corn flour (or maize flour as the Ancient Maya called it), one was a mix of corn and wheat flour and the other was made from wholemeal flour.
The children decided what they liked and didn't like about each food item and started to come up with ideas for what ingredients they would like to include in their own dips. Have a look at some photos of us doing the food tasting below:
