As part of our river topic, Y3 learnt about water usage. Maxine from Severn Trent visited us and spoke about how water is used and ways we can save the water we use.

We learnt that 70% of the Earth is covered in water and there are different types of water that make up the Earth. Salty seawater makes up 97% of the water on the planet, 2% is ice and there is only 1% of fresh water we can use. This is where Severn Trent works to create clean fresh water.

We were then split into groups and given cards based on different families-the fog, snow, mist, rain and hail family. We were armed with water and measuring jugs to calculate how much water each family used. We also looked at different scenarios and were asked whether they were saving water  or wasting water. We learnt how some families were great at saving water, such as the fog family who only used 500 L of water, whereas some families used lots of water, such as the snow family who used 2172 L of water. 

Maxine informed us that on average, 160L of water should be used per person in the UK and the average family of 4 should use around 600 L of water.

We then talked about ways we could save water and these ideas can be seen on the Severn Trent Website you can even send away for a Free package which includes water-saving devices: Get Water Fit | Save water | Wonderful on Tap | Severn Trent Water (stwater.co.uk). We agreed on ways we could save water, such as turning the tap off when brushing our teeth or having a shorter shower.

Later on in the morning, we learnt about the water cycle and the different stages of this in a whole school assembly.

The children were brilliant, curious to learn more and demonstrated impeccable behaviour!
