A round up of summer 1 in y3

Find out what we've been doing and learning in Y3!

Wow! What a busy half-term Year 3! Not only have we had jam-packed weeks of enthusiastic learning. But we have also enriched the Y3 curriculum through visiting Ling’s Lane, talking to Severn Trent as part of our River topic, learning about the danger of railways and visiting Perlethorpe! We also took part in the Keyworth art competition and the Link festival at Southwolds. All these events were blogged so you can look back to previous blogs to find out more information. I hope you all have a really good rest and spend some quality time with your families! You’ve earnt it!

Here is a round up of our learning this half-term:

Literacy:

In Literacy this week we have been writing our own warning stories. Over the past few weeks, we have orally learnt the story of ‘the canal’, a story based on two boys who are warned to stay away from the canal because it is dangerous (and one of the boys is unable to swim). We then worked our way through the grammar that is included in this text and practised using this. More recently we wrote our own versions of ‘the canal’ and wrote about other potentially dangerous settings, such as: an abandoned plane, a scrapyard, a derelict factory, and a damaged stadium. Why not look at our wonderful writing from this unit, the children are super proud of their efforts, and so they should be!:

We have also written a cold task based on our next ‘discussion’ unit: ‘Should we wear school uniform?’. After half-term we will be thinking about discussion texts and the features you might find.

Spelling:

We have nearly covered all the spelling units for this year, to ensure these spellings are remembered, it is important for the children to do their doodlespell assignments weekly. Lots of you are already doing this which is fantastic to see!

Maths:

In Maths, we have been working on time and measurement and the practical elements of maths. Over the holidays it might be worth practising time and recalling the times tables (2,5,10, 3, 4 and 8). Little and often is best, and we know how crucial times tables are when using quick arithmetic. Remember that there are doodle assignments set based on work we have already learnt as reinforcement or upcoming modules.

Science:

In science, we are halfway through our plants topic-we have learnt about ‘the parts of a plant’, ‘how plants survive’ and how water is transported through a plant by using real life flowers and food colouring!

Geography:

As part of our river's topic, we have looked at the journey of a river, the features of a river, rivers around the world, human impacts upon rivers and locating the River Trent.

Art:

The children loved learning about the famous artist David Hockney. We have focused on his exuberant landscape paintings and tried to recreate our very own using sketching and acrylic paints! We have thought about sketching techniques such as shading, line and tone, as well as the colour palette required.

  RE:

In RE this half-term, we have looked at the stories of Jesus and focused on figures within the Bible such as Moses, Noah and Joseph. We have also looked at the parables they are featured in and thought about the key messages behind them for Christians.

French:

In French, we have worked on fruit names, using the correct pronoun and orally practised how to say which fruits we dislike and like.
