What have y3 been doing recently?

What have we been doing recently?

In Year 3, we have been busy, as we are coming towards the end of the term, I thought I would let you know what we have been doing in class as well as upcoming dates.

Literacy:

In Literacy, we have been working on ‘discussions’. We have learnt how to form a discussion which includes an opening, reasons for and against, and a conclusion. We focused on a text called ‘Should the boys be allowed out again?’ this followed on from our previous text ‘the canal’. Two boys were warned not to go into the canal and decided to ignore this warning. We have thought about reasons for why the boys should go out again and reasons against the boys going out again.

Class reading book:

We have now finished our class text ‘Cliffhanger’ by Jacqueline Wilson which the children thoroughly enjoyed.  From climbing and abseiling to canoeing and a Crazy Bucket Race, the adventure holiday promises to be full of action. There's just one problem as far as Tim is concerned: he is hopeless at sports of any kind.

Spelling:

We have now completed all fourteen of our spelling units and are focusing on revising previous units through whole class activities and individual focus on particular units. You can find these units on doodlespell as ‘extras’. I regularly upload orange/red words (words the children need to know) as well as words learnt from spelling rules taught within units. It is important that children access doodlespell little and often and remain in their green zone to ensure they are confident in applying their spellings to their writing.

Maths

In Maths, we have now completed all the units in Year 3 maths. We are now reinforcing and consolidating our learning as well as ensuring we are confident in recalling our 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 timestables. Although, in Y3 we do not ask for the children to use doodletables now may be a great time to begin using this app as this is a homework expectation from Y4 upwards.

Science:

In science, we have now finished our ‘plants’ topic and have learnt about how plants reproduce and seed dispersal.

History:

In history, we have been learning about the following questions: Did the Greeks invent democracy/government, and how is it similar or different today? How did the Greeks change sport? And how did the Greek influence the English language?

On Thursday 11th July, we are extremely excited that Greece is coming to the school hall at KPNS to take the Y3's on a guided tour of  the Acropolis in Athens and visit the statues of the Greek gods on Thursday 11th July. Climb Mount Olympus and see if the rumours are true - can you bring the gods to life? Learn about how the Ancient Greek people lived, their Gods, and what they did for fun!  The morning is jam-packed with exciting activities and experiences which will take the children back in history.

Transition Afternoon - 5th July

This afternoon, Year 3 spent time with their new class teacher, Miss Middleton. They took part in getting to know me games and  arty activities related to their new significant individual- Stan Lee. For the final two weeks of this half-term the Y3 will also be taught by Miss Middleton for several vipers lessons to ease with the transition.

Sports Week - WB 8th July

Next week is our annual Sports Week. Children will be taking part in a variety of sports activities, finishing off the week with our races on Friday morning. Parents are welcome to attend our races! Please see the information on our sports and enrichment blog.

End of Year Performance

We have started learning the lyrics to the songs for our school performance. If you follow this link, you will find the lyrics and music for you to practise at home.

  • Tuesday 22nd July- Morning Performance of The Wizard of Oz
  • Wednesday 24th of July- Afternoon and evening performances (6:30pm) of The Wizard of Oz

Homework Reminders

I have noticed a dip in the number of children reading at home and completing their Doodle Maths and Doodlespell. As we are approaching the end of Year 3, it is still very important that your child reads their reading book 3x a week and stays in the green zone on Doodle Maths and Spell. This will help their progress in school and help them prepare for Year Four.

You still have time to achieve your gold reading award and begin to think about the summer doodle challenges which you find out more about here: Keyworth Primary and Nursery School - Doodle summer challenges!
