Year 1 so far...
Year 1 have had a very busy start to the year.
Before I start by telling you what we have been up to, you may have heard that we received a very special delivery in the post this week. At the start of the year, Attenborough class wrote a letter to the one and only, Sir David Attenborough asking him questions about his adventures and discoveries. This week, we received his hand written reply! Each child has been given a copy to take home and keep and the original copy will be displayed in school. All children should feel very proud of themselves and their hard work!
Literacy
In literacy we have started to look at The Enormous Turnip. We are at the early stages of our writing journey so we have been exploring different vegetables and generating exciting descriptive sentences using adjectives. Some of my favourite sentences include 'The tomato is red like a rose.' 'The onion has long, tickly roots.'
We even had a visit from Farmer J who told us a story about the most ENORMOUR TURNIP she had ever grown. It was very exciting.
Science
After labelling human body parts, we started exploring how humans can be different and found we can be different in lots of different ways including shape, size, skin colour, eye colour and foot size. We decided to see which eye colour was the most popular in Attenborough class so gathered data and displayed our findings on a pictograph. Over the next few lessons, we will be exploring our 5 senses in more detail.
History
We are starting to develop an understanding of the past, present and chronological order. We have been looking at toys we play with now in more detail such as their materials, function and how they are made. On Tuesday, we will be visiting Sudbury Hall to explore toys from the past!
We have had lots of opportunities to develop our motor skills, team work, creativity and handwriting over the first few weeks in year 1 and it is lovely to see Attenborough class start to develop the skills required for year 1 learning. Check out some photos below of our learning journey so far.
