Year 1 learning updates!

We have lots of fun and exciting activities planned for our final few weeks in Year One! See below what we have been up to and what we have got coming up.

What have we been up to?

In science, we observed how cress seeds change over time. We watched as the roots and stem grew over the course of a few days, and practised being scientists by drawing and labelling our findings. Once we had finished our observation, we inspected the cress plants to identify the roots, stems and leaves.

In computing, we have been learning how to collect data, formulate a tally chart and represent our findings using an online pictogram. This has been very fun!

In history, we have been learning about old and new modes of transport. Children are very interested in this topic, and are enjoying looking at the very old aeroplanes!

On Thursday 11th July, Year One will be taking part in a ‘Transport from the Past’ workshop where we will learn about transport across the ages. During the workshop, we will meet and step into the shoes of famous inventors like the Wright Brothers, Henry Ford and George Stephenson. Year 1 will take a whirlwind trip across time and terrain learning about inventors and transport inventions!

Transition Afternoon - 5th July

On Friday, Year One will be spending time in their Year Two classroom with one of their new teachers, Mrs Ahmed. Please still collect your child from the Year One classroom at the end of the day.

Sports Week - WB 8th July

Next week is our annual Sports Week. Children will be taking part in a variety of sports activities, finishing off the week with our races on Friday morning. Parents are welcome to attend our races! Please see the information on our sports and enrichment blog.

End of Year Performance

We have started learning the lyrics to the songs for our school performance. If you follow this link, you will find the lyrics and music for you to practise at home.

  • Tuesday 22nd July- Morning Performance of The Wizard of Oz
  • Wednesday 24th of July- Afternoon and evening performances (6:30pm) of The Wizard of Oz

Phonics Screening Check

A big well done to all children for their hard work and resilience during the Key Stage 1 Phonics Screening Check. They tried their very best and showed off their phonics skills beautifully. The results from the screener will be shared with you in your child's end-of-year report.

Homework Reminders

I have noticed a dip in the number of children reading at home and completing their Doodle Maths. As we are approaching the end of Year 1, it is still very important that your child reads their phonics book 3x a week and stays in the green zone on Doodle Maths. This will help their progress in school and help them prepare for Year Two.

You still have time to achieve your gold reading award and collect lots more Doodle Maths stickers!

Dates for your diary:

  • Friday 5th July- Whole School Transition Afternoon- Spend the day with new teachers.
  • WB 8th of July- Sports Week (Information about this will be shared soon)
  • Friday 12th July- Sports Day
