Science week in Y6
Find out what we have been doing during Science week in Y6.
During Science week this year, Year 6 have been learning about Alan Turing. We did a VIPERS (guided reading) lesson to learn about his interesting life and the impact that he had on WWII. He was instrumental in decoding the secret messages sent by the German army using their machine, Enigma. Year 6 then used their electricity knowledge to create a circuit containing a buzzer and had a go at sending a message to each other using Morse Code. Some groups even made their own switches! They were then able to have a go at a bit of code breaking, just like Alan Turing.
On Thursday, Y6 had a visit from ‘Wild Things’ and learnt all about how we can support hedgehogs and provide homes for them. We learnt some really interesting facts about them: their legs are 10cm long and they can run as fast as we can walk; they walk about 1 mile every night to find food, water and shelter; they have between 5000 and 7000 spines on their backs. There’s lots we can do to help hedgehogs like not clearing leaves from gardens and making sure there is a gap in the fence so they can move between gardens.
