Self-portraits

Self-portraits in the style of Frida Kahlo.

Our art unit during our Identity topic has been to study Frida Kahlo and then create a self-portrait in the same style.

We learnt all about Frida Kahlo's life and looked at examples of her work. She was a surrealist artist, meaning that there were certain things about her portraits that she exaggerated. She is famous for painting herself with larger eyebrows and also adding facial hair.

The children practised techniques for drawing facial features before copying a photograph of Frida Kahlo. They then used a photograph of themselves to help create their own self-portrait in which they exaggerated one feature. The final touch was to create a collage of their favourite things for the background. Have a look at the finished pieces below - can you guess who they all are?
