Unlocking Every Child’s Potential

Curriculum Overview

At Keyworth Primary, we are committed to providing a curriculum that is effective, exciting, and relevant to the needs of our children. Our curriculum goes beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum, ensuring that children not only develop a secure foundation in English and Mathematics but also acquire a deep understanding and knowledge in all other subjects. Teaching early reading is a key priority, as we know it is the key to unlocking children’s ability to access all areas of learning.

Our ambitious, knowledge-based curriculum offers a broad range of subjects from Early Years to Key Stage 2, designed to ensure children develop the skills and knowledge to succeed at secondary school and beyond. We believe in teaching subjects as separate disciplines, so that our children become historians, scientists, artists, and more, with learning building across units of study and year groups. This approach helps children develop not just knowledge but also the unique skills and thinking needed for each subject.

We place great emphasis on making learning engaging and purposeful, so that children see the relevance of their learning in the real world. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that children’s knowledge and understanding build progressively from Nursery through to Year 6. We encourage children to revisit prior learning regularly, so they are able to deepen their understanding and make connections between different subjects and topics.

Through our curriculum, we aim to foster a love of learning and inspire children to develop a lifelong curiosity. We focus on developing children’s cultural capital, extending their vocabulary, and igniting their curiosity. Our extensive enrichment opportunities, including trips, residentials, specialist visitors, clubs, themed days, and inter-school activities, provide children with real-world experiences that bring learning to life and develop their social, moral, spiritual, and cultural understanding.

Assessment is a fundamental part of our approach. Teachers continually assess children’s understanding of the curriculum to inform the next steps in teaching. This assessment approach helps ensure that learning is consolidated and any gaps in knowledge are addressed. We use a combination of formative and summative assessments to track children’s progress, guide future learning, and ensure that all pupils are supported in their learning journey.

To support the curriculum, we use Knowledge Organisers and spaced retrieval techniques to help children remember and apply what they have learned. These strategies ensure that children are not just covering content but truly retaining and building upon their knowledge.

Our ambition is to ensure that children develop the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, while also encouraging them to become confident, resilient, and independent learners. We teach children to be active citizens, promoting diversity, moral responsibility, and an understanding of global issues through subjects like geography and history.

Every subject at Keyworth Primary has a dedicated subject leader, who ensures that the subject is taught effectively and in line with our vision. These leaders play an important role in writing our Intent documents, which inform the planning and delivery of each subject. These documents ensure consistency and clarity in teaching, making sure that all pupils have access to a high-quality curriculum.

We are committed to providing a curriculum that is engaging, challenging, and accessible for all pupils. We believe that every child deserves to reach their full potential, and we are dedicated to supporting each pupil's individual learning journey.

Please see the separate sections of this page for more information about individual subjects.
